How to find unclaimed money in Canada

Every place on this page is free and official. You should never pay a company to search for you, and no real government site will ask for a fee to release your money.

Want a checklist made for you? Our free MoneyOwed tool asks a few optional questions and shows only the official places that fit your situation. Your answers stay on your device.

1. Bank of Canada unclaimed balances

Dormant bank accounts, old Bank of Canada cheques and unredeemed Canada Savings Bonds end up here. Search your last name, and try old cities you lived in. Search the Bank of Canada.

2. Uncashed CRA cheques

Sign in to your CRA account and choose “Uncashed cheques”. It lists refund and benefit cheques at least 6 months old, and you can ask for a replacement. No account? You can call the CRA instead. CRA uncashed cheques.

3. File a tax return every year, even with no income

Many payments only start once you file, including the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (the GST/HST credit was renamed this in July 2026). If you're behind, a free volunteer tax clinic can help with past years if your income is modest and your taxes are simple.

4. Provincial unclaimed money lists

Watch out: a text or email saying you have a refund or unclaimed money waiting, with a link to click, is a common scam. Go to these sites by typing the address yourself. See our guide to the CRA text scam.
